14 Apr Do You Need To Pay Your Employees For Training Courses
Businesses must pay its staff for training courses (counting the hours toward overtime calculations) UNLESS the following are all true:
- Outside normal work hours.
- Completely voluntary.
- Not directly job-related.
- No productive work performed.
If the class is to develop the employee for his or her current position, it is likely “job-related.” It can probably be excluded if the training prepares the employee for advancement or is for college credit.
You can pay a lower rate for training time (as long as that training rate meets or exceeds minimum wage) but must notify the employee in writing of the pay rate the company will use for these hours.
